Largo Argentina: theater of hatred

It was March 15, 44 BC.

Julius Caesar is hit by twenty-three stab wounds, inflicted by a group of conspirators led by his adopted son Marco Giunio Bruto and Gaius Cassio Longinus.

Twenty-three is an incredible number of stab wounds which is justified by the fact that all the conspirators were called to rage on the body of Julius Caesar so that the responsibility for the attack and consequent death was equally divided.

the last day of Julius Caesar in Largo Argentina

The reason for this heinous murder lay in the fact that the conspirators feared the centralization of power in the hands of a single man, Julius Caesar, thus putting an end to the republic.

According to a legend, not confirmed by historical sources, while he was shot to death, Caesar would have addressed the famous phrase to Brutus: “Tu quoque, Brute, fili mi” (You too, Brutus, my son).

The fact took place inside the Sacred Area of Largo Argentina in Rome as known as Largo di Torre Argentina due to the presence of a medieval tower no longer existing.

The stabbing of Julius Caesar took place at the foot of a large statue of Pompey (his first ally and later enemy) behind the columns of a circular temple near the Curia of Pompey which at that time was the temporary seat of the Roman Senate.

Despite its historical importance, today the Sacred area of Largo Argentina is known to the international public for hosting a cat sanctuary in Rome.

Following the excavations carried out between 1926 and 1930 in the central area of Campo Marzio and which brought to light the remains of four republican temples, a colony of cats has settled in the area, cared for and assisted by the famous “gattare”.

Eventhough placed in an archaeological area and therefore abusive, once obtained water and light, in 1994 is established the Largo Argentina Cat Sanctuary in Rome, that provides shelter to stray and abandoned cats in Rome Capital City.

Largo Agentina: cat sanctuary in Rome

Largo Argentina, the Cat Sanctuary in Rome, provides medical assistance to all cats in need.

It receives no state funding and is dependent on volunteers and visitor donations to support its long-distance adoption program.

The Ides of March: yesterday and today

While the ashes of Caesar rest in peace in the Roman Forum where the Ara di Cesare stands, from Myles Kennedy to Iron Maiden, the ides of March have inspired various musical groups.

In 2011, the ides of March returned to the limelight giving the title to a movie directed by George Clooney which, while relating to the dynamics of power, tells the story of political competition in the USA.
