What is digital nomads
All those who carry out a work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely are considered digital nomads. Foreign citizens who work in smart working or remote working in Italy are also considered as such, whether they carry out their activities as freelancers or are employed by a company based abroad.
Remote working visa:the new rules in Italy
Based on the “Decreto Sostegni TER”, digital nomads and remote workers from non-European countries become part of the categories of foreign workers who can be issued a special remote working visa. The procedure to obtain the visa is simplified, i.e. outside the quotas provided for each year by the decree that regulates the flow of foreigners to Italy.
Some types of highly specialized or peculiar workers for their type of activity can benefit from this preferential path. Their entry is in any case subject to the issue of a permit to work which must be requested by the employer following the Regulations implementing the Consolidated Immigration Law.
A specific amendment also includes within this category – and this is the novelty – non-European citizen workers who carry out their smart working activities in Italy, digital nomads or remote workers, to be precise. For them, the rules are even less stringent.
Let’s see the prerogatives:
– no work permit is required;
– the residence permit, upon acquisition of an entry visa, is issued for one year, provided that the holder has the availability of remote worker insurance to cover all risks in the national territory.
In any case, the worker must comply with the tax and social security provisions in force in national law.
Digital nomads, the future scenarios
Remote work is undoubtedly a new opportunity for all those who want to explore the world and, in particular, want to live in Italy without having to leave their job.
